About Nuthatch

The Nuthatch Solar project is a proposed utility-scale solar project located on privately-owned land in Highland County, Ohio.

We selected this location after analyzing potential sites using selection criteria, including:

  • Avoiding impacts to sensitive natural and cultural resources
  • Minimizing impacts to host communities
  • Access to an existing transmission system with capacity
  • Minimizing environmental impact
  • Proximity to areas with high energy demand
Benefits

Nuthatch Solar will bring a host
of benefits to Highland County
and the State of Ohio, including:

Generating significant tax revenue

Generating significant tax revenue for local schools, police, fire, and other critical services in Highland County.

Preserving farmland

Preserving farmland by providing landowners and farmers with steady, secure income so they have the opportunity to keep their land rather than selling it for residential or clustered development. After the 40-year life of the project, the land can be returned to its original condition, as we are obligated by state law to pay for the decommissioning of the project, allowing the agricultural land to be used by future generations.

Promoting energy independence and energy security

Promoting energy independence and energy security by generating clean, affordable electricity to help meet growing consumer demand.  Ohio currently imports up to 25% of the electricity it consumes from out of state because in-state generation does not meet demand. Solar farms like Nuthatch Solar help secure the energy grid, contribute to energy independence, and keep more energy money local and in Ohio.

Creating hundreds of jobs

Creating hundreds of jobs during construction, in addition to long-term operations and maintenance jobs.

Good Neighbors & Community Engagement

We are committed to continued
community and stakeholder engagement.

Nuthatch Solar is being developed by DESRI, a leading renewable energy developer, owner, and operator. Since its formation in 2011, DESRI has demonstrated a successful track record of developing and owning high-quality, utility-scale wind and solar power plants. Our portfolio of contracted, operating, and in-construction renewable energy projects currently includes 70 solar and wind projects located in 24 states representing more than ten gigawatts of aggregate capacity. Specifically in Ohio, DESRI is the lifetime owner and operator of the neighboring 300 MW Highland Solar project. Across Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana, DESRI has over 600 MW under construction and more than 800 MW in operation. Our experience in the region has familiarized us with the needs and preferences of residents, enabling us to develop projects that are adapted to community preferences while supporting the energy needs of the region.

The DESRI team continues to develop new renewable energy projects across the US. We prioritize working with local partners to develop solar projects in close coordination with our home communities. We have a history of collaborating with local partners and landowners to respond to their individual concerns. In conjunction with industry and academic experts, we have established construction and management techniques that reduce environmental impact while improving and maintaining soil health and water quality. Our design and procurement strategies focus on using advanced solar panel and racking technologies to maximize production and minimize project footprint.
